John 3:16 is one of the most, if not the most well-known verse in all of Scripture. It has been called the “Gospel in a nutshell,” because many consider it a summary of the central doctrines of Christianity. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was thrust into modern culture by Rollen Frederick Stewart aka Rainbow Man, a fixture in American sports culture. He would wear a rainbow-colored afro-style wig, a white T-shirt and carry signs referencing John 3:16 at numerous sporting events around the United States and overseas. Since that time, John 3:16 has become a mainstay at sporting events, recently garnering attention from the media through the efforts of former Florida Gators quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.
